Val presents a celebration of the swing era’s most legendary jazz divas at Upwell Jazz Club, featuring the music of Anita O’Day, Sarah Vaughan, Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday.

Twice named Best Vocalist in the British Jazz Awards, Val Wiseman’s outstanding career began in the Midlands, shaped by strong early interests in both music and drama. Her development was further enriched through opportunities to perform with some of Britain’s most respected and influential jazz bands. Notably, leading figures such as Alex Welsh, Humphrey Lyttelton, Monty Sunshine and Kenny Baker quickly recognised her talent, inviting her to join their tours and broadcasts and helping to bring her to wider attention.

As her reputation steadily grew, Val secured a starring role in the acclaimed Billie Holiday tribute production Lady Sings The Blues, performing alongside a group of top British jazz musicians. Both the stage show and its accompanying album received excellent reviews, leading to television appearances and concerts across the world, and earning Val a devoted and expanding audience. Her debut solo album, Just For A Thrill, released in 2003, was met with enthusiastic critical response, paving the way for further recordings and a wide range of performances, including tributes spanning from Duke Ellington to the Brontë family.

Val continues to tour with Lady Sings The Blues, maintaining its popularity with audiences. When she appears at Upwell Jazz Club on 27th September, she will be joined by her trio—Dave Newton, Simon Thorpe and Eric Ford—to present Divas of Swing. This programme is her own personal tribute to some of the most celebrated jazz vocalists of all time, including Anita O’Day, Sarah Vaughan, Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday.
